Former Surgeon’s Residence

Description

Set within Castlemaine’s former medical precinct, the Former Surgeon’s Residence has long held a quiet but formal presence. Designed in 1880–81 by Thomas E. Kibble, the house sits with composure, its symmetrical brick façade, slate roof and cast-iron verandah speaking to a time when domestic life and professional duty were closely intertwined. It faces not the street, but the neighbouring nurses’ quarters, a reminder of its place within a broader institutional setting rather than as an isolated home.
